They emailed me back with lots of information about how to formally make my request. I have to contact them directly through the licensing department's direct line to explain the unique nature of this student project and some guidance as to what is the fastest and most effective way to get written permission to use the song. I was also explained that I would need those two approvals, both Motown and UMG! This is certainly longer process than I expected it to be and I hope I'll be able to get the approval in time! The use of the song will help efficiently shift from the opening experiment's tone in the hopes that I can establish that the movie has a very contrasting theme: it's a story about humanity told through human division.

I received an email from UMG recently, they apologized and explained to me that they had given me the standard approvals needed instead of taking into account the specific song I wanted to use. Universal Music Group doesn't control the publishing rights needed to license the song; however, they did forward me the contact information of the music houses that do own those rights! I visited www.ascap.com and www.bmi.com to find the right information to the publishers. I contacted them via phone to get the necessary understanding about submitting my inquiry, I then emailed them and I'm currently waiting for their response!
